Special Conditions
After receiving the training card, applicants must refer to the Emirates driving training company to receive a theory training certificate as he/ she will not be allowed to take the test before bringing this certificate.
Clients can bring forward the test date in return for a fee of AED 50. In case the applicant fails three times in the road test, his/ her file will be transferred to the Emirates company to undergo theory and field test.
Ladies are not entitled to open a driving license file of heavy vehicles or motor cycles.
UAE Nationals, men/women, wishing to open a new driving license should hold passports issued from the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Otherwise, they should present a letter from the Traffic Police Department in the Emirate, place of issuance, proving that the applicant has never opened a driving license exam file, or obtained a driving license.
For Residents:
Holders of personal sponsorships: In case the sponsor is a UAE National and the residence permit is issued from one of the Northern Emirates, then the sponsor should present whatever proves that he/she lives or works in Abu Dhabi, in addition to a letter from the Traffic Police Department of the said Emirate stating that the applicant has never opened a driving license exam file, or obtained a driving license.
Holders of residence permits issued by a federal ministry or a government entity: In case the residence is issued from one of the Northern Emirates, the applicant should bring a lease agreement to prove that he/ she lives in Abu Dhabi, in addition to a letter from Traffic Police Department of the said Emirate stating that the applicant has never opened a driving license exam file, or obtained a driving license.
Holders of residence permits sponsored by private companies: holders of residence permits issued from a Northern Emirate and who work in one of the private companies in Abu Dhabi shall be allowed to apply for a driving license in Abu Dhabi provided that his job title is director/manager and should present a lease agreement proving his residence in Abu Dhabi. This procedure applies to their wives and children.
Those with no evidential documents: opening a driving license file for this category is restricted to those employed in the police, armed forces or Ceremony Department. This procedure does not apply to their relatives.
New Driving License
This service is to issue a driving license to those who have passed the final driving test or for those who wish to transfer their driving license from another Emirate to the Abu Dhabi Emirate.
